Dr Jennifer Harrison

Chair, WPA Section for Art and Psychiatry

Dr Harrison is a child, youth and family psychiatrist with specialist experience in developmental disorders, neuropsychiatry and rural psychiatry.

For 25 years she has been the consultant psychiatrist for the Developmental Assessment and Management Program at Alfred CYMHS, and since 2007 she has run the Alfred CYMHS Neuropsychiatry Clinic. She was the founding consultant for the innovative 4-year pilot project: Mental Health in Intellectual Disability-Youth (MHIDI-Y), which in 2020 received permanent funding.

She was nominated for an Alfred Hospital Individual Achievement Award for her work in establishing this service. She is a committee member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry’s Section for the Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability and Developmental Disorders (SPIDD) and chairs the Victorian Subcommittee.

Dr Harrison holds honorary academic appointments within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne, the School of Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine at Monash University and The Dax Centre, University of Melbourne.

She founded and continues to manage The Dax Poetry Collection at The Dax Centre, which houses one of the world’s largest collections of artworks created by individuals with lived experience of mental illness or psychological trauma.

She is currently Chair of the World Psychiatry Association’s Section for Art and Psychiatry. She serves on the Acquisition Committee for the Cunningham Dax Collection and chairs. She was awarded the 2012 Christopher Brennan Award for lifetime achievement in Australian poetry.
