New Psychotherapy Written Case marksheet to be introduced from May 2025

Following wide consultation, and based on a recommendation from the Committee for Examinations, the Education Committee has approved a new Psychotherapy Written Case (PWC) marksheet. The updated PWC marksheet will be implemented from the upcoming 16 May marking round.

The new PWC marksheet is designed to streamline the marking process and provide clearer feedback to trainees. The updated criteria will not require trainees to alter their current approach to writing the PWC.

The new marksheet will be phased in and will apply only to first submissions received on or after 16 May 2025. Trainees with submissions currently under assessment will continue to be assessed under the existing criteria until their individual assessments are complete.

Key changes include:

  • An improved explanation of the write-up requirements in the presentation domain.
  • Removal of the emphasis on English language proficiency, reducing disadvantages for trainees from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
  • Greater clarity and updated terminology throughout all sections.
  • Standardised use of the word “patient” in the marksheet.
  • Introduction of two new domains “Reflective Appraisal” and “Risk Appraisal” placed between the Assessment and Management Plan domains.
  • Addition of a new domain header above the Assessment domain, labelled “at the end of Stage 3 – Junior Consultant Level.”
  • Improved wording in each section, replacing ambiguous phrasing and providing succinct explanations where possible.

These revisions are based on feedback from trainees, Directors of Training, and examiners, with the aim of improving clarity and refining the wording of descriptors. The revised scheme is significantly clearer and is expected to positively impact the marking and feedback process.
