Close the Gap Day 2025
20 Mar 2025
Update
Thursday 20 March is Close the Gap Day, a day to recognise that every organisation, group and individual in Australia can play a role in closing the gap around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes and life expectancy.
Last month, the Prime Minister delivered the Closing the Gap 2024 Annual Report and 2025 Implementation Plan. The report showcased the actions by the Government to progress closing the gap, and addressed some of the details noted in the Productivity Commission’s report on the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. Unfortunately, these efforts are not enough, and in all jurisdictions the majority of priority outcomes are either stagnant or worsening, as reported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency outcomes tracking.
The College continues to work to Close the Gap in many mays. The launch of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2024–2026 last May strengthens our commitment to create and sustain culturally respectful and safe environments, and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ ways of knowing, being, and doing across all areas of the College.
Some of our areas of focus also include:
Committing to review our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander focused policy resources this year
Reviewing our consultation and engagement strategy prioritising cultural safety to ensure First Nations voices are incorporated in our advocacy
Continuing to fulfill our commitments in the Public Statement: Combatting racism in psychiatry through the work of the Racism Awareness Steering Group
Engaging with the Raise the Age campaign, with a focus on the impact of incarceration on Indigenous youth.
