The Australian Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC) routinely conducts data matching of Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) claiming data to identify possible incorrect claiming, inappropriate practice and fraud.
DoHAC has identified health providers claiming for MBS services, including telehealth services, while they are overseas. Under Section 10 of the Health Insurance Act 1973, Medicare benefits are only payable for services rendered in Australia, to an eligible person. When using telehealth internationally, the service needs to be billed privately – see the RANZCP guidance (RANZCP Telehealth webpage) and Medical Board of Australia: Telehealth consultations with patients.
There will be an audit of the identified claims, which may affect psychiatrists. The RANZCP encourages members to ensure their claiming practices comply with requirements.
