Peter Whitcombe

Te Tumu Tauwhiro | Chief Social Worker

Peter is the Chief Social Worker for Oranga Tamariki, and acts as Oranga Tamariki’s authority on all matters relating to social work practice spanning the areas of Child Protection, Care Services and Youth Justice. Within this role he provides overall leadership and direction for practice, influencing within and across the children’s system, setting priority areas of focus, as well as shaping workforce strategy and professional development approaches. Peter has spent his working life focused on leading practice and services in ways that promote oranga and empowerment for tamariki, whānau and communities.

Joining Child, Youth and Family in 2001, Peter began his career in residential services in Ōtautahi. He moved to supervise a Care and Protection team and then took up the South Island Executive Manager role. Since this time Peter has worked as a site manager, Director of the Canterbury Children’s Teams, Youth Justice Regional Manager and a General Manager responsible for the five youth justice residences. Peter led the creation of first National Strategic Partnership between Oranga Tamariki and Ngāi Tahu and was responsible for the development and early implementation of the National Care Standards.      
  
Peter has a Degree in Social Work and an MBA. He is a registered Social Worker. Peter lives in Ōtautahi with his wife and their three children. In his spare time, he enjoys running, skiing, and making and listening to music.
