The high secure hospital in NSW had struggled since its inception to minimise the use of restrictive practices. In the last five years this situation has improved. This webinar discusses the challenges faced, strategies employed, de-identified case histories, external pressures, and metrics for improvement, that all centres using seclusion can learn from.
Speakers
- Dr Calum Smith, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, WA Health
Dr Calum Smith is a consultant forensic psychiatrist who currently works in Western Australia. Prior to this he worked in NSW for Justice Health and the Forensic Mental Health Network. He is interested in the reduction of psychiatric restrictive practices in all their forms. He was involved in designing and implementing the plan to end the long-term seclusion of a patient in the NSW High Secure Hospital. He has presented on this project at various conferences and to various organisations.
- Associate Professor Andrew Ellis, NSW Clinical Director Forensic Mental Health
Associate Professor Andrew Ellis is a forensic psychiatrist. He is the NSW Clinical Director Forensic Mental Health. Andrew is deputy chair of the RANZCP Faculty of Forensic Psychiatry. He is also a conjoint Associate Professor at UNSW School of Medicine.
