RANZCP to present to the Inquiry into the mental health conditions experienced by first responders

05 September 2018

The Melbourne Public Hearing for the Senate Educations and Employment Committees Inquiry into the mental health conditions experienced by first responders has begun.

The inquiry is focused on the role of the federal, state and territory governments in addressing the high rates of mental health conditions experienced by first responders and emergency service workers.

Some of the areas the inquiry will look at are:
  • Nature and the underlying causes of mental health conditions experienced by first responders, emergency service workers and volunteers;
  • Research identifying linkages between first responder and emergency service occupations, and the incidence of mental health conditions;
  • Management of mental health conditions in first responder and emergency services organisations, factors that may impede adequate management of mental health within the workplace and opportunities for improvement.
Public hearings will be held on:
5 September 2018 in Melbourne
25 September 2018 in Sydney

RANZCP Board member Dr Peter Jenkins will be presenting to the inquiry on:
  • Strategies to encourage early help-seeking behavior in first responders and emergency service workers
  • The need for workplaces to provide ongoing support, reviews and wellbeing checks for staff
  • The need for workplaces to provide support for workers to transition into other roles or out of the emergency services
The hearing is a public event, and evidence given in relation to the inquiry can be viewed live on the Parliament’s website.
