Comment from RANZCP on removal of training posts at Royal Hobart Hospital

09 August 2017

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) has advised Tasmanian Health Services that it has withdrawn accreditation for the three psychiatry training posts in the Adult Inpatient Psychiatry Unit currently in place at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The RANZCP takes most seriously the issue of the health and safety of our patients and trainees.

The RANZCP is responsible for the accreditation of hospitals for psychiatric training in accordance with the developed accreditation standards covering main educational, clinical and governance areas. The accreditation is provided to ensure quality training experiences that facilitate the training of safe and competent psychiatrists. This includes standards such as:

  • Service requirements such as orientation, leave arrangements and adequate capacity to train
  • Provision of required training experiences
  • Organisation, monitoring and support of trainees
  • Institutions/services and training rotations
  • Supervision.

The RANZCP wishes to reiterate that this accreditation withdrawal only affects three psychiatry training posts within Tasmania and the trainees affected are being accommodated within the Tasmanian training program.

Given that we are continuing to work with Tasmanian Health Services, the RANZCP is not in a position to make further comment at this time.
